Biography

Mike Ananny is an associate professor at USC Annenberg, focused on the intersections of communication, journalism studies, media studies, and science technology studies. His research examines how technologies and media production influence public life, including the practices, assumptions, and controversies surrounding platforms, data infrastructures, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. Ananny is actively involved in interdisciplinary research, co-leading the MASTS (Media SocioTechnical Systems) research collective and serving on the faculty advisory committee of USC’s Center for Science and Technology in Public Life. Throughout his career, he has attained various fellowships and scholarships, including positions at Stanford University, Columbia University, and Harvard University. Ananny is also a founding member of Media Lab Europe and has contributed to projects with Microsoft Research. His work has been published in both academic and popular venues, and he is the author of 'Networked Press Freedom' (MIT Press, 2018).
