Biography

Mike Grocott is a professor of anaesthesia and critical care medicine at the University of Southampton and the director of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Southampton Biomedical Research Centre from 2022 to 2028. He chairs the NIHR Directors Forum and has served as the deputy-chair of the NIHR Translational Research Collaboration for Surgery and Perioperative Care. He is an NIHR Senior Investigator, having held this position initially from 2018 to 2022 and was reappointed for 2022 to 2026. Grocott has extensive experience in critical care medicine as a consultant at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. He has been an elected council member and trustee of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and served as vice-president from 2019 to 2020. He founded the national Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) and is currently the vice-chair of the CPOC board. He has held leadership roles in various esteemed institutions, including the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) and the Royal College of Anaesthetists' Health Services Research Centre. Grocott has also led significant research initiatives, including the Xtreme Everest medical research expedition in 2007 and has co-founded the Centre for Perioperative Health Economics Policy (CPHEP) in 2024.
