Biography

Mike Hawkins is a historical political geographer whose research focuses on Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. His research examines the histories of the American empire in the Philippines, the geopolitics of decolonization in Southeast Asia, and the urban geographies of labor in Manila. In 2022, he completed his dissertation which analyzed the changing politics of labor at the Port of Manila across distinct historical contexts, including early American colonial rule, the decades following Philippine independence, and contemporary times. Apart from these, he is also interested in historical archival methods and ethnographic research.
