Mike Kendall is a Professor and holds the Chair in Geophysics in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford. He joined the department in 2019 and became the Head in March 2022. His research interests encompass applied seismology, focusing on experiments in some of the most extreme environments on Earth, including Ethiopia and Antarctica. He has studied the Earth's core and surface, and has worked on plate tectonics, volcanic activities, and the dynamics of ice sheets. Mike has led seismic field experiments in various settings, including the installation of ocean-bottom seismometers to monitor the mid-Atlantic Ridge, and using fiber-optic arrays to detect ice-quakes in Antarctica. He is particularly interested in the role that geophysics plays in addressing the world’s energy demands. Mike founded the BUMPS research consortium, which has a strong record in seismic monitoring of carbon capture and storage sites. His career includes tenure at the British Geological Survey as a Professor of Geophysics and academic positions at the University of Toronto and the University of Leeds. He has also served as the president of the British Geophysical Association and as Vice-President (Geophysics) of the Royal Astronomical Society. Recognized for his contributions to the field, Mike was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2011 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2019, and received the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society in 2024.
