Biography

Prof. Mike Surridge gained his PhD in Theoretical Physics from Southampton in 1986 and worked at the University of Amsterdam's Institute for Theoretical Physics before returning to Southampton to focus on Computer Science at the Parallel Application Centre, which later became the IT Innovation Centre. Over the past 15 years, he has specialized in parallel high-performance computing systems and architectures, with particular interest in programming models and performance engineering applications. His contributions date back to the late 1980s and 1990s, where he ported commercially vital applications to run on parallel computers, known as MSc/Nastran codes. Surridge has led engagements in cluster-wide area network computing and computational grids, demonstrating web service infrastructures for business-to-business resource sharing while featuring decentralized fine-grained trust models, aligned with modern cloud computing architectures. His work in grids sparked an interest in information security, allowing him to develop secure systems and operational policies through the UK's E-Science programme. Notably, he co-founded the EC/NESSI Software Services Trust Security Working Group, served as chair, and contributed to the EC Future Internet Architecture Board. He has coordinated projects like FP7 ICT-SEC SERSCIS focusing on critical infrastructure protection and model-based analysis for trustworthiness in various H2020 initiatives. Surridge continues to provide valuable insights into security projects and participates as part of the GCHQ Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security at the University of Southampton, producing nearly 100 scientific publications.
