Biography

Dr. Mike Tymko is an Assistant Professor in the College of Biological Science at the University of Guelph, specializing in environmental cerebrovascular physiology. His research interests were developed during his undergraduate studies at Mount Royal University under the supervision of Dr. Trevor Day, where he participated in a research expedition team in the Nepal Himalaya, conducting human physiology experiments. This led him to complete his MSc with Dr. Glenjamin Foster, studying the effects of changes in oxygen arterial blood tension on respiratory function. Following this, he earned his PhD with Dr. Philip Ainslie at the University of British Columbia, focused on peripheral cerebrovascular function at high altitudes. Dr. Tymko’s postdoctoral training included work at the University of Alberta, where he explored autonomic nervous activity's relationship with cerebrovascular function, and at the University of British Columbia, focusing on mild brain injury (concussion). His lab utilizes various methods to evoke alterations in autonomic nervous activity, such as hypoxia and thermal stress, to investigate their effects on brain blood flow regulation in health and disease.
