Biography

Mikela led pioneering research industry projects in construction, transportation, and healthcare, uniquely positioning academic industrial expertise. In the past fifteen years, she has successfully secured, managed, and delivered more than 25 research commercial projects across various sectors and countries, amounting to millions of pounds in funding. She holds a PhD in Socio-Technical Systems Safety and Human Cognition, an MSc in Systems Engineering Management, and an MEng in Manufacturing Engineering Management. Her academic career includes postdoctoral research roles at the University of Cambridge Engineering Design Centre and at Imperial College London, contributing to the Centre for Transport Studies and the Centre for Systems Engineering Innovation. As a full-time employee in the industry, Mikela held positions at WSP and Arup, focusing on organizational and technical integration for major infrastructure projects like HS2, Crossrail, and the Metro de Bogotá. Notably, she served as the Director of Research at Arup and as the Functional Lead at WSP. Currently, she is a full Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at UCL. Mikela is a member of the Department of Transport's College of Experts and the Health and Safety Executive's Science Quality Assurance Group. Her scholarly contributions include books on Project Risk Management and Systems Safety, along with 60 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals and conferences. She is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Technology (FIET) and holds the status of Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Scientist (CSci).
