Dr. Mikhail Shapiro

Biography

Mikhail G. Shapiro is the Max Delbrück Professor of Chemical Engineering and Medical Engineering at California Institute of Technology. He earned his B.S. from Brown University in 2004 and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008. Since joining Caltech as a Visiting Associate in 2013, he has progressed through roles including Assistant Professor and Professor before being named Delbrück Professor in 2023. Shapiro is also an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and has held several prominent research positions including HMRI Investigator and Schlinger Scholar. His research focuses on developing molecular technologies for noninvasive imaging and controlling cellular functions, aiming to advance the study of fundamental biological processes that occur deep within living organisms. The Shapiro group specializes in molecular cellular engineering and employs techniques such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance to explore topics in neuroscience, cancer, microbiology, and immunology. He is actively developing methods to manipulate cellular and molecular functions without invasive procedures, utilizing unique biological structures and their physical properties as engineering starting points.
