Biography

Mikkel Thorup is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen. He has been a VILLUM Investigator leading the Center for Basic Algorithms Research in Copenhagen (BARC) since 2017. His main research focuses on efficient algorithms and data structures, where he has contributed significantly by working on upper and lower bounds and hash functions, seeking to unify theory and practice. Thorup has authored over 200 publications, including more than 40 papers in leading conferences in theoretical computer science and a substantial number in algorithms conferences. His research is informed by a mathematical perspective inspired by nature and is recognized through an H-index of 60. He is an ACM Fellow and has received numerous awards, including the MAA Robbins Award in 2011 and the 2015 Villum Kann Rasmussen Award, Denmark's most significant individual research prize. Thorup’s collaborations, both nationally and internationally, reflect his active participation in the academic community.
