Professor Dr. Milan Mrksich

Biography

Milan Mrksich is a prominent professor in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University, where his research focuses on the intersection of biology and chemistry, particularly through the engineering of protein-based molecules known as Megamolecules. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois in 1989 and went on to complete his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology in 1994. His group has pioneered a new platform that utilizes organic chemistry and materials science to address significant challenges in biochemistry. By developing modular approaches to create complex architectures from protein domains, they have achieved structures that can exceed 100 nm in dimension and molecular weights greater than 1 M Dalton. Mrksich’s innovative work includes the development of the Self-Assembled Monolayers MALDI Mass Spectrometry (SAMDI-MS) technique, which is used in high-throughput qualitative experiments. His work has applications in the field of diagnostics and therapeutics, and he has published numerous research articles on enzyme-inhibitor reactions and the synthesis of megamolecules, contributing significantly to advancements in the field.
