Dr. Milena Droumeva

Biography

Milena Droumeva is an Associate Professor and the School Director of the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on Sound Studies, mobile media, sensory ethnography, and gender, with a strong emphasis on the relationship between sound and cultural narratives. Having a background in acoustic ecology, she has contributed significantly to urban soundscape research, investigating issues such as sonification and public engagement within the context of audio data. Droumeva's current projects include sound ethnographies of livable soundscapes and the effects of urban audio environments on creativity and productivity, particularly in relation to artisanal coffee shops. She was previously a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute for Research on Digital Learning at York University. Her scholarly work combines theoretical insights with practical applications, often exploring how sound informs our understanding of identity and societal dynamics. Her publications address varied topics including the politics of the female voice in video games and the role of sound in educational contexts. Droumeva is actively engaged in academic discourse around sound studies and serves on several boards related to community engagement and auditory display.
