Biography

Mina Momeni holds a PhD in Communication Culture from the joint program at Toronto Metropolitan University and York University, as well as an MFA in Documentary Media from Toronto Metropolitan University. Momeni's research focuses on understanding how individuals interact with and are influenced by digital media and smart applications. Their work explores how technologies can create possibilities that empower users to act while also constraining or disabling action in certain contexts. Momeni's teaching expertise lies at the intersection of digital media, artificial intelligence, digital arts communication, human–computer interaction, multimedia storytelling, and visual culture. As an interdisciplinary artist, Momeni's work, which includes photographs, videos, and multimedia installation art, investigates the relationships between people, ancient cultures, symbology, monuments, and memories. Momeni has exhibited work in galleries across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Currently, they are working on several primary projects, including a book manuscript that examines the affordances of Twitter in political activities involving human and bot users, with case studies from significant events such as the 2017 Women’s March and the “Build the Wall” discourse in the United States in 2019. Another research project investigates political deepfakes as a recent form of AI-generated misinformation, focusing on how audiences understand and engage with these technologies. The primary outcome of this project is a journal article titled "Artificial Intelligence Political Deepfakes: Shaping Citizen Perceptions of Misinformation," which is set to be published in the double-blind peer-reviewed Journal of Creative Communication in 2024.
