Biography

Ming-chin Monique Chu serves as a lecturer in Chinese politics at the University of Southampton. Before joining Southampton, she taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of Oxford. She holds MPhil and PhD degrees in international relations from the University of Cambridge, where her research focuses on geopolitics, geoeconomics, semiconductors, concepts and practices of sovereignty, and Cross-Strait relations. Her groundbreaking monograph, 'The East Asian Computer Chip War' (Routledge, 2013), examines the security implications of semiconductor globalization and has become a widely cited authoritative work in the field. She has also co-edited 'Globalization Security Relations Taiwan Strait: Shadow China' with Scott L. Kastner (Routledge, 2014). Her scholarly contributions extend to publications in reputable journals such as Journal Strategic Studies, China Quarterly, and China Perspectives. Currently, Dr. Chu is working on her monograph titled 'Achilles Heel Dragon – Problematic Sovereignty China’s Periphery' and the research project, 'Economic Statecraft Semiconductor Supply Chain Vulnerability Taiwan, China, United States,' supported by a €78,000 research grant from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation International Scholarly Exchange. Additionally, she has received teaching excellence awards at SOAS and the University of Southampton, and has provided oral evidence regarding China’s Asian policies to the House of Lords International Relations Committee.
