Biography

Ming C. Wu is the Nortel Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a co-director of the Berkeley Sensor Actuator Center (BSAC) and the Berkeley Emerging Technologies Research Center (BETR). His academic journey began with a B.S. from National Taiwan University in 1983, followed by a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1988. Prior to joining Berkeley, he was a researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories and UCLA. Over his career, Dr. Wu has published over 600 papers in journals and conferences and holds 35 patents. His research interests include Optical MEMS, optofluidics, silicon photonics, and optoelectronics. He co-founded OMM, Inc. in 1997 and Berkeley Lights, Inc. in 2011. His contributions to the field have earned him recognition through numerous awards, including the Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award from the OSA and the William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award from the IEEE Photonics Society, among others. Dr. Wu is a Fellow of IEEE and OSA, and he has been recognized as a Bakar Fellow. His work continues to push the boundaries of technology in optical switching and cellular analysis, contributing significantly to advancements in the field.
