Biography

Minh Bui is an Associate Professor at the School of Computing at the Australian National University. He has been in this position since prior to 2018, when he was a Research Fellow at the Max Perutz Laboratories in Vienna, Austria. His research focuses on the interface of Computing, Biology, and Statistics, aimed at enabling evolutionary research in the genomic era. Bui leads the Computational Phylogenomics Lab, where significant advancements have been made in developing widely used bioinformatic methods and models for phylogenetic inference from ultra-large genomic data sets. Notably, he has led an international team in the development of IQ-TREE software, which is employed to investigate subjects ranging from early life forms to the recent coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. Bui has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher from 2021 to 2023 in the field of Web Science and is considered an Australian Field Leader in Evolutionary Biology. He received his PhD from the University of Vienna in 2009, an MSc from the University of Freiburg in 2005, and a BSc from Vietnam National University in 2001.
