Biography

Miranda Smitheram is a design researcher, educator, and artist exploring the themes of remediation and materiality. Originally from Aotearoa/New Zealand, she is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Design and Computation Arts at Concordia University. As the Director of the MaSH Lab and Co-Director of the Textile and Materiality Research Cluster at Milieux Institute, she investigates new hybrid materials and their sustainable applications in the redesign of material futures. Her current research, which is funded by the FRQ-SC, focuses on decolonizing matter and developing ethical care and relational practices. Miranda has a diverse industry background in fashion and textile design, with over ten years of experience as a design team leader and owner of an independent fashion label. Her academic credentials include a Master's in Design, a Master's in Philosophy with Class Honors, and a PhD from the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies at Auckland University of Technology, where her thesis examined the ontology of aesthetics in digital virtual materiality. She has been recognized with awards such as the Dean's Award for Excellence and a Māori Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and has presented her work internationally across several countries.
