Biography

Mirena Christoff began her academic career as an Assistant Professor of Arabic at Sofia University, teaching advanced language translation courses for eight years. She has also taught Arabic courses at UCLA, Beverly Hills Lingual Institute, and Middlebury College, before joining the faculty at Brown University in the Center for Language Studies in 2002. Her professional involvement includes developing a comprehensive Arabic curriculum that spans from beginning to advanced levels, as well as supervising the Arabic program and serving as an academic advisor for freshmen and sophomores in the Middle East Studies concentration at Brown. Christoff has translated extensively from Arabic, and her research publications reflect her pedagogical and scholarly interests in translation studies, Arab cultural history, and the teaching of Arabic as a foreign language. Her recent research compares Arabic adaptations of the French romantic novel 'Paul et Virginie,' examining how literary translations embody the specific circumstances, worldviews, and writing techniques of their authors. Her work reveals how modern Arab authors have used translation as a means to express their artistic individuality and address concerns relevant to contemporary society. Christoff's research topics further include modern Arabic translation cultural history and the integration of translation into foreign language instruction.
