Dr. Mirko Canevaro

Biography

Mirko Canevaro is a renowned scholar specializing in Greek history, with a focus on Athenian law and democracy. He completed his BA and MA in Classics at the University of Turin, followed by a PhD in Classics and Ancient History from Durham University. His academic career began with a post-doctoral fellowship at the British School at Athens, leading to positions at the University of Edinburgh where he was appointed Chancellor’s Fellow in Classics in 2013. Canevaro has contributed significantly to the field through his publications, including a monograph on the documents of public speeches of Demosthenes and extensive commentary on Athenian politics. His research interests revolve around the socio-political dynamics of ancient Greece, including honor systems and economic inequalities. He has received prestigious awards, including the Philip Leverhulme Prize and the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Thomas Reid Medal, acknowledging his contributions to the arts, humanities, and social sciences. In addition to his teaching and research, Canevaro serves in several editorial roles and is actively involved in promoting classical studies and diversity within the discipline, co-founding the Network for Working-Class Classicists.
