Biography

Professor Hornung's research area includes aircraft design, integration, and evaluation, focusing on conceptual aircraft design and theoretical experimental evaluation within an overall system technology framework. He operates within the operational context of aviation and received his doctorate in aeronautical engineering from the University of the Bundeswehr (Federal Armed Forces) in Neubiberg, where his thesis focused on reusable space transport systems. Hornung was awarded a research prize in 2003 and subsequently worked from 2003 to 2009 in the Military Air Systems Division at the Airbus Group, formerly known as EADS. During this period, he was responsible for conceptual design in future manned and unmanned military aircraft, also taking on roles in propulsion systems integration and business development. He currently serves as the executive director for research technology at Bauhaus Luftfahrt, an international think tank dedicated to long-term developments in aviation.
