Biography

Mirko Winkler is a Professor of Urban Public Health and Co-Director of the Department of Public Health at the University of Basel's Medical Faculty. His professorship is based at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and focuses on contributing to sustainable development through transdisciplinary research and strategic health planning. Trained in Environmental Sciences (MSc ETH), Epidemiology (PhD), and Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H), he leads the Urban Public Health department at Swiss TPH. His research, teaching, and advisory activities prioritize public health perspectives with a strong focus on equity in urban planning, large-scale infrastructure development, health system planning, and conflict areas. In Africa, he has studied how large infrastructure projects impact the health of surrounding communities. In the Middle East, he has applied health impact assessment (HIA) in the context of protracted conflicts to advise humanitarian actors. He has investigated the health risks and opportunities of urban agriculture's wastewater reuse in various global cities. His current research projects range from participatory action research related to urban planning processes to an international randomized cluster-controlled study on decentralized handwashing stations' effectiveness. Mirko Winkler teaches at Swiss TPH, ETH Zurich, and the University of Basel, and is a guest lecturer at various Swiss universities. Internationally, he has led HIA training courses for practitioners, policymakers, and scholars in various interactive formats.
