Dr. Mitchell Elkind

Biography

Mitchell S.V. Elkind, MD, MS, MPhil is a Professor Emeritus of Neurology and Epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, where he has significantly contributed to the fields of stroke prevention and neuroepidemiology. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his training in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Elkind furthered his expertise through a fellowship in Vascular Neurology and Neuroepidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center under the mentorship of Dr. Ralph Sacco. His research centers around inflammatory and infectious biomarkers for stroke risk prediction, atrial cardiopathy, immune therapy for acute stroke, and the vascular causes of cognitive aging. Dr. Elkind has served as Principal Investigator in numerous important studies, including the ARCADIA trial examining apixaban versus aspirin in cryptogenic stroke, and the Northern Manhattan Study (NOMAS) evaluating stroke risk factors. He is also involved in the Neuroprotection Statin Therapy Acute Recovery Trial (NeuSTART) and the Levels of Inflammatory Markers Treatment Stroke (LIMITS) study. Residing in New York City, he enjoys family life with his wife, a children’s book author, and their two sons.
