Dr. Mitchell Lazar

Biography

Mitchell Lazar is the Willard Rhoda Ware Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases. He serves as the Director of the Penn Diabetes Research Center and is the founding Director of the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism. With extensive post-graduate training, he has developed significant expertise in the field of endocrinology. His research focuses on the mechanisms of metabolic diseases, particularly transcriptional regulation involving nuclear receptors and their roles in insulin resistance and obesity. Lazar's lab utilizes genomic, genetic, proteomic, and bioinformatic approaches to understand the physiological roles of nuclear receptors and to explore the connections between metabolism and inflammation. He has contributed to the understanding of resistin—a hormone linked to metabolic diseases—and continues to investigate the impact of circadian rhythms on metabolism. Lazar's work has led to numerous publications in high-impact journals, and he actively mentors a diverse group of researchers including post-doctoral fellows and graduate students in his laboratory.
