Dr. Mitchell Smooke

Biography

Mitchell Smooke is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Yale University, where he has held various positions including Strathcona Professor and Chairman of Mechanical Engineering. He completed his M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Over his career, Professor Smooke has significantly contributed to the field of computational combustion, focusing on topics such as chemical vapor deposition and the numerical solution of ordinary partial differential equations. His research has included computational studies of soot formation and flames, the modeling of multidimensional premixed and non-premixed flames, and investigations into microgravity combustion. With over 250 invited lectures at international conferences and universities, he has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, including the AIAA Propellant Combustion Award and the Combustion Institute Zeldovich Gold Medal. Professor Smooke has secured over $25 million in research funding and plays an instrumental role in advancing computational combustion research through innovative software and algorithms.
