Biography

Mitul Luhar joined the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southern California as an Assistant Professor in January 2015 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2021. He holds the Henry Salvatori Early Career Chair, which he was appointed to in 2020. Luhar's academic journey includes earning a Doctoral Degree in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012, as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2007. His research expertise encompasses fluid dynamics, specifically in aerodynamic and hydrodynamic design, coastal protection, river restoration, and environmental science, blending laboratory experiments with modeling approaches. Prior to joining USC, Luhar was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at Caltech. He has received several awards, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2020, and has been recognized as a New Voices Program participant by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in 2024.
