Dr. Ml Groot

Biography

ML Groot is a physicist specializing in medical photonics and biophysics, with a keen interest in developing novel photonic methodologies to enhance clinical healthcare. His fascination with femtosecond lasers and nonlinear optical interactions with tissue light has led to unique biophysical processes that allow for visualization and study. Groot received his PhD in Physics in 1997 from Vrije Universiteit and subsequently worked at the University of Chicago in the Department of Chemistry as a Marie Curie Fellow. He returned to Amsterdam in 2000 and has since held several prestigious positions, including the Fenna Diemer Lindeboom chair and full professor. Groot's research focuses on ultrafast spectroscopy, photosynthetic proteins, nonlinear microscopy for tissue analysis, and has led to the development of higher harmonics generation microscopy and the Instant Pathology project. His group collaborates with various institutions and has received funding for important research projects aimed at understanding 3D microstructure and skin biomechanical properties. Through his work, Groot contributes significantly to the fields of biotechnology and personalized medicine.
