Dr. Modupe Coker

Biography

Modupe Coker holds multiple key roles at Penn Dental Medicine, serving as Assistant Dean for Clinical Translational Research and Director of the Center for Clinical Translational Research (CCTR). As an Associate Professor in the Department of Basic and Translational Sciences, Dr. Coker is a pivotal figure in advancing the clinical research agenda of Penn Dental Medicine, driving innovative research initiatives that support colleagues and elevate the institution’s research capabilities. She is responsible for strategic oversight and operational management of the CCTR, ensuring that research activities are conducted to the highest standards of excellence and integrity. Dr. Coker is instrumental in expanding the clinical research portfolio of Penn Dental Medicine, identifying and nurturing opportunities that could lead to significant contributions in the field of dental translational sciences. Her role as Assistant Dean involves overseeing clinical research operations that align with the school’s mission and strategic objectives. Dr. Coker’s leadership is marked by her commitment to fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment, and she is deeply involved in mentoring team members, Principal Investigators (PIs), students, and faculty within the school. Her research interests focus on the microbiome's relationship with early-life infections, behavioral factors, and environmental influences on oral and dental health. Driven by a passion for uncovering therapeutic interventions to improve health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations, Dr. Coker aims to translate research findings into practical solutions that benefit communities. Prior to joining Penn Dental Medicine, she established a robust research program at Rutgers University and has held adjunct faculty positions at esteemed institutions, reflecting her dedication to education and research. Dr. Coker earned her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.
