Biography

Mohamad Bydon, M.D., is a Professor and the inaugural Chair of Neurological Surgery at the University of Chicago. He serves as Co-Director of the Neuroscience Service Line at the University of Chicago Medicine and is the Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at the University of Chicago Health System. Dr. Bydon earned his B.A. from Dartmouth College and completed a post-baccalaureate program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He also had a research fellowship at a Howard Hughes Medical Institute laboratory focused on stem cell biology. He received his M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine and continued his training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he completed his Internship, Neurosurgery Residency, and a Clinical Fellowship in Complex Spine Surgery and Spinal Oncology. Prior to joining the University of Chicago, he practiced at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he held endowed full professor positions and contributed to leadership roles focused on surgical outcomes and international development. Dr. Bydon's clinical expertise includes complex spine surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery. He launched the nation’s robotic minimally invasive spine program in 2015 and is the principal investigator of a recognized laboratory that focuses on data analytics in surgical outcomes and clinical trials for spinal cord injury. He is actively invited to speak nationally and internationally and has authored over 600 peer-reviewed manuscripts, numerous book chapters, and abstracts. Additionally, he is the editor-in-chief for the International Journal of Neuroscience and is involved with the editorial boards of various journals in his field.
