Dr. Molly Babel

Biography

Molly Babel is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia. She also serves as the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Chair. Her research interests span Laboratory Phonology, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics, and Speech Sciences, with a strong focus on speech perception and production. Babel's work investigates the interaction between language systems and their influence on phonetics, exploring how experience and exposure shape phonetic knowledge. She has conducted extensive fieldwork on Northern Paiute, examining dialectal variation in English and Cantonese. Babel's publications have appeared in significant journals, contributing to understanding lexical competition and social influences on speech production and perception.
