Biography

Monica Bravo is an assistant professor in the Department of Art and Archaeology. She specializes in the history of photography and modern art in the Americas. Her book, 'Greater American Camera: Making Modernism Mexico,' published by Yale University Press in June 2021, explores the exchanges between U.S. modernist photographers—including Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, Paul Strand, and Helen Levitt—and modern Mexican artists across various mediums, contributing to the development of Greater American modernism during the interwar period. Bravo's research has been supported by fellowships from prestigious institutions such as the Center for Advanced Study in Visual Arts and the Terra Foundation for American Art. She was also short-listed for the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award by the College Art Association. Her current research project, 'Silver Pacific: Material History of Photography and Minerals, 1840–1890,' examines transpacific networks and overlapping ecologies in American photographic history. Previously, she held positions at the University of Southern California, California College of the Arts, and Yale University, where she was also an inaugural co-chair of the Photography Network for the College Art Association.
