Biography

Monica Gotta completed her undergraduate studies in biology in Italy and pursued postgraduate studies at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC). She obtained her PhD from the University of Lausanne in 1997 and joined the Gurdon Institute at the University of Cambridge in 1998, where she studied the mechanisms of cell polarization. Returning to Switzerland in 2002, she initially worked as a SNSF-funded professor at ETH Zurich before being appointed as an associate professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva in 2008, focusing on asymmetric cell division and the generation of cell diversity. She was promoted to full professor in 2014 and has received the prestigious EMBO Young Investigators Award from the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) and became a member in 2023. Gotta is actively involved in promoting young women in science through various mentoring programs in Geneva. In 2018, she became a member of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) 'Eccellenza' panel and joined the SNSF Research Council's Biology Division in 2021 and the SNSF Careers Committee in 2022. As of July 15, 2023, she is a delegate in the Dean's Office for research funding.
