Biography

Monica Mulrennan is a Full Professor in the Department of Geography, Planning & Environment at Concordia University and a Special Advisor to the Vice-President Research, Innovation and Impact. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) and a PhD in Geography from University College Dublin, Ireland. Monica is a founding member of CICADA (the Centre for Indigenous Conservation Development Alternatives) at McGill University and an honorary member of the ICCA Consortium, focusing on Indigenous Peoples’ Community Conserved Areas and Territories. Her research interests center on Indigenous knowledge and stewardship, particularly in relation to Indigenous land-sea territories, conservation strategies, and environmental protection. Monica has engaged in research partnerships with Torres Strait Islanders and James Bay Crees for over twenty-five years, contributing significantly to the documentation of Indigenous land-sea claims and the establishment of Indigenous-led conservation initiatives. Since joining Concordia in 1994, she has held several leadership positions, including Associate Dean and Chair of the Department. In 2017, Monica received Concordia University’s Academic Leadership Award. She leads Concordia's institutional “Pathways Impact” initiative and serves as a delegate on the Pew-sponsored Presidents and Chancellor's Council on Public Impact Research.
