Biography

Dr. Monica B. Pagano oversees transfusion practices, providing consultation for patients with complex transfusion needs and clinical situations. Her primary goals are to provide the best possible treatment for patients and to educate medical students and healthcare providers about the use of blood products. She obtained her MD degree from the University of Buenos Aires and completed her training in Internal Medicine at IDIM Dr. Alfredo Lanari in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Pagano relocated to join Dr. Thompson’s research laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, where she studied inflammatory mediators. She has been affiliated with the University of Washington as a Laboratory Medicine resident and completed a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. She is board certified in Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Her research interests include medical education, adverse events associated with transfusion, and the development of clinical guidelines for red blood cell and platelet transfusions. Dr. Pagano is an Associate Scientific Member of the Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion (BEST) Collaborative, and serves as chair of the Clinical Transfusion Medicine Committee for AABB and on the Graduate Medical Education subcommittee for ASFA.
