Biography

Monica Sesma-Vazquez is an Assistant Professor and the Academic Coordinator of the Couple Family Therapy Program at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary. She is also a Research Coordinator at the Calgary Family Therapy Centre and a Board Member of the Canadian Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Monica focuses on research related to mental health wellbeing, issues faced by children, families, immigrants, and refugees, as well as gender-based violence. With a strong emphasis on relational systemic work, her research aims to support underserved communities. Monica's educational background includes a PhD in Psychology from Universidad de las Americas, Mexico City, and a clinical specialization in Social Work from the University of Calgary. She utilizes qualitative methodologies in her teaching and research. Monica has received several awards, including the Supporting Teaching Award and the Graduate Teaching Excellence Award from the Faculty of Social Work. Additionally, she received the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Taos Institute in both 2016 and 2022, and she is slated to receive the FSW Early Career Research Award in 2025.
