Dr. Moniek Buijzen

Biography

Moniek Buijzen is a Professor of Communication Science at Erasmus University Rotterdam, focusing on the integration of artificial intelligence into society. She leads the Movez Network and the Erasmus Initiative for Societal Impact of AI, which is a nationwide 10-year program addressing public values in the context of algorithmic society. Her research investigates how digital technology can be used to promote healthy lifestyles while minimizing potential risks. With an approach that combines social sciences, health sciences, and computer sciences, Buijzen emphasizes collaborative and cross-sectoral efforts in her work. She explores how to engage the society in discussions about the responsible use of AI through various programs that unite researchers, educators, and artists. Having obtained her doctorate from the University of Amsterdam in 2003, Buijzen held roles as an assistant and associate professor before her appointment as a full professor. Her previous achievements include receiving several prestigious grants and awards for her contributions to the field of communication and media studies. She actively works to bridge the gap between science and society, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
