Biography

Monique Desroches was a full professor in ethnomusicology at the Faculty of Music at the Université de Montréal, where she taught since 1988. She obtained her PhD in ethnomusicology from the Université de Montréal in 1986, focusing on Tamil ritual music in Martinique. She later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, and at the Université d'Aix-Marseille III, focusing on the Indian music of the Indian Ocean. In 1989, she established the Collection of World Music Instruments, which now hosts 550 instruments. In 1995, she created the Laboratory of World Music Research (LRMM), and in 2010, the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology and Organology (LEO), both significant for teaching and research in ethnomusicology. She has authored numerous works in ethnomusicology, including books on Creole and Indian music in the Caribbean. Desroches has actively participated in university life and various committees, including international research committees. Since 2010, she has co-directed the Collection Musiques et Anthropologies at Harmattan, Paris, and has led various research projects related to music and cultural identity.
