Dr. Monique Roelofs

Biography

Monique Roelofs is a Professor and Chair in Philosophy, Art, and Culture at the University of Amsterdam. Her academic work is widely recognized for its contributions to decolonial theory, feminist discourse, and Black aesthetics. Roelofs’s publications include several acclaimed monographs, such as 'Cultural Promise of the Aesthetic' (2014), which explores the intersections of aesthetics with race and gender, and 'Arts Address: Alive Language World' (2020), which presents a nuanced cultural critique rooted in aesthetic production. She is also co-editor of 'Black Art Aesthetics: Relationalities, Interiorities, Reckonings' (2024), which gathers perspectives from various artists and scholars within this emergent field. Roelofs has held multiple visiting fellowships and academic appointments at esteemed institutions, including Brown University and Duquesne University. Notably, she has served as a Trustee for the American Society of Aesthetics and has been actively involved in the International Association of Aesthetics. Her ongoing research focuses on the world-making capacities of aesthetics and its role in addressing contemporary societal issues.
