Dr. Monique Turner

Biography

Monique Mitchell Turner is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Michigan State University. Previously, she served as Associate Dean of MPH programs at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. Her research specializes in health risk communication, with a particular emphasis on the design and evaluation of messages, risk perception, and cognitive processing. Turner examines how emotions influence psychosocial processes that explain message effects, specifically focusing on guilt, shame, anger, and fear as they pertain to public health messaging. She is the author of the Anger Activism model, which analyzes the role of anger in constructive versus counterproductive behavioral outcomes. Turner directs the Center for Risk Communication Research at the University of Maryland, where her research has garnered funding from various organizations including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control. In addition to her research, she has held multiple editorial roles such as Senior Editor for Health Communication and Associate Editor for Communication Research Reports. Turner actively encourages graduate and undergraduate students to reach out for research opportunities in her labs that focus on health risk communication and the design of effective health risk messages.
