Biography

Monte Mills joined the University of Washington faculty in 2022 as the Charles Stone Professor of Law and Director of the Native American Law Center. He teaches courses focusing on American Indian Law, Property, and various topics related to Native American natural resources. Mills' scholarship emphasizes the intersection of Federal Indian Law, tribal sovereignty, and issues related to natural resources, race, and legal education. He has served as Executive Editor for the 2024 edition of Cohen’s Handbook of Federal Indian Law and co-authored textbooks such as 'American Indian Law, Cases and Commentary' alongside prominent colleagues. His work articulating the importance of Indigenous legal perspectives has appeared in significant legal journals and media. Before his tenure at UW, Mills was a faculty member at the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana and held the position of Director of the Legal Department for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe in Colorado.
