Biography

Montserrat C Anguera, PhD, is a faculty member at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Biomedical Sciences and the study of X-chromosome Inactivation and its implications on the immune system and stem cells. Her research focuses on the epigenetic mechanisms involving long noncoding RNAs during early human development and placental progenitors. She investigates how alterations in dosage of X-linked genes affect early embryonic development and contribute to sex-biased diseases, particularly autoimmune disorders such as lupus, which exhibits a strong female bias. Her laboratory has made significant discoveries related to the epigenetic status of inactive X chromosomes in female lymphocytes, elucidating mechanisms behind the maintenance of X-chromosome inactivation in these cells. Further, she studies sex-specific differences in human placental development and has identified a novel X-linked long noncoding RNA that regulates the innate immune response, specifically in human placental progenitor cells.
