Biography

Moojan Ghafurian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo and the Director of the Emotionally Intelligent and Trustworthy (EITA) Research Laboratory. Prior to joining Systems Design Engineering, she served as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2020 to 2023. She holds the distinction of being the inaugural Wes Graham postdoctoral fellow at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science from 2018 to 2020. Moojan earned her PhD in Information Sciences and Technology from Pennsylvania State University in 2017, with a minor in Computational Science. Her research focuses on human-computer and robot interaction, social robotics, affective computing, and cognitive science. She explores computational models regarding how humans interact with computers to inform user-centered design for socially and emotionally intelligent technologies, particularly within healthcare contexts supporting older adults and individuals with dementia. Her work has been published in prestigious journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing and the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, and has received media attention in outlets such as ACM TechNews and ScienceDaily.
