Dr. Morgan Clarke

Biography

Morgan Clarke is a prominent figure in the field of anthropology, specializing in social anthropology with a focus on the intricate relationships between Islam, sharia, and modernity. He trained in anthropology at the University of Oxford, where he completed his doctoral research in 2006. His academic journey includes a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Cambridge and a Simon Fellowship at the University of Manchester. Since returning to Oxford in 2011, he has served as an Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow at Keble College. His research addresses themes such as Islamic bioethics, kinship, and the everyday implications of sharia norms within the Shi‘i Muslim community in the UK. Clarke’s collaborative work with Dr. Ali-Reza Bhojani seeks to deepen understanding of the tensions between religious rules and social norms, providing insights that aim to combat misconceptions about sharia. He has made significant contributions to the field through his publications, including co-editing the volume "Rules Ethics: Perspectives in Anthropology and History". Clarke is also actively involved in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in social anthropology, guiding doctoral students in research related to Islam, law, and ethics.
