Biography

Moriah E. Thomason is the Barakett Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Her research primarily focuses on the social and environmental determinants that shape perinatal and early human neurodevelopment. She is dedicated to understanding fundamental aspects of brain development and the factors that influence growth and evolution. Thomason aims to identify biomarkers during the early stages of disease development to serve as effective targets for new therapies. Her interests include scalable and actionable intervention strategies related to sleep, health education, and social support, as well as the use of passive sensors for intervention detection. Beginning her pediatric MRI studies in 1999, she initially concentrated on the neural mechanisms of cognitive development, cognitive control, and behavioral inhibition. Over time, her work has evolved to address early adversities such as trauma and their impact on behavioral disorders in children and adolescents. Recently, her studies have expanded to explore a broader range of health determinants, including toxicant exposure, discrimination, stress, and the predictability of environments, as well as the effects of early-life adversity on subsequent generations' neural development.
