Biography

Morteza Zihayat is an Associate Professor and the Canada Research Chair in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (Tier II) at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research focuses on the intersection of decentralization and democratization of artificial intelligence (AI). He is recognized as a leading expert in developing AI models and information retrieval systems that are ethical, fair, and transparent. Zihayat is dedicated to designing AI systems that genuinely prioritize human values, integrating insights from data-driven methods with principles of fairness and accountability. His current projects involve developing debiasing AI algorithms and tools utilizing blockchain technology, data management, and machine learning. As part of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, he explores the application of AI in various industry collaborations. He has partnered with the Toronto Transit Commission, Globe Mail, and AT&T and currently serves as a Research Faculty Fellow at IBM’s Centre for Advanced Studies, focusing on advancing human-centered AI for societal benefit. Zihayat is also actively engaged in bridging research with industry applications.
