Biography

Mostafa Khalil is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary since September 2025. He specializes in photonics and quantum technologies, with his research spanning device-level innovations to system-level applications. His contributions include investigating the use of quantum dot/dash lasers for coherent optical communications and microwave photonics, achieving multi-terabit transmission rates. Khalil has explored electro-optic methods for optical frequency comb generation and designed various photonic integrated circuits. His industry-focused research has led to the development of innovative encryption schemes for high-speed coherent optical communications during his internship at Quantropi Inc. His postdoctoral work at the National Research Council Canada and McMaster University expanded the field of free-space optical satellite communications. Currently, he is exploring areas such as Quantum optical microcombs and scalable multipartite quantum key distribution. Khalil has authored over 40 publications and serves as a reviewer for IEEE Photonics and Optica.
