Biography

Mrinal K. Mandal received his degrees in Electronics Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India, in 1987 and from Bengal Engineering Science University, India, in 1989. He completed his MASc and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada, in 1995 and 1998, respectively. He has worked as a scientist with the Indian Space Research Organization and as a software developer for Corel Corporation in Ottawa. Since 1999, he has been a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta. He was a Humboldt Research Fellow at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, in 2005. Dr. Mandal is a senior member of IEEE and a registered professional engineer in Alberta, Canada. He has authored several books and published over 200 papers in refereed journals and conferences. His research interests include image processing analysis, medical imaging, and document analysis, focusing on developing efficient image analysis algorithms for healthcare applications, including histopathological skin lesion image analysis and brain MRI image analysis. He has received notable fellowships, including the Canadian Commonwealth Fellowship and the Humboldt Research Fellowship in Germany.
