Dr. Mu Zhu

Biography

Mu Zhu is a Professor at the University of Waterloo and serves as the Associate Dean of AI Strategy. He holds a University Research Chair and is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. Mu received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his PhD from Stanford University. His early research focused on dimension reduction, efficient kernel machines, rare target detection, ensemble methods, and variable selection. He has developed algorithms for personalized recommendations, particularly in healthcare informatics. More recently, Mu has explored various topics including evaluation metrics, protein structures, transactional networks, and genetic epistasis. He is also the author of a textbook on data science intended for students. Currently, his research includes dependence modeling, large covariance matrices, and generative neural networks.
