Biography

Muhammad Abdul-Mageed is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, with a joint appointment in the School of Information and the Department of Linguistics, as well as being an Associate Member of the Department of Computer Science. He holds the position of Canada Research Chair in Natural Language Processing and has a strong research focus on deep representation learning and socio-pragmatics in natural language processing. His goal is to innovate equitable and efficient social machines that improve human health, enhance social networking, and reduce information overload. His work currently spans a wide range of tasks in speech language understanding and generation, including language models, automatic speech recognition, and machine translation. He is a founding member of the Institute for Computing, Information, and Cognitive Systems and is active in leading several SSHRC-funded partnership grants.
