Biography

Muhammad Alam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen's University. He received his BASc from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2000, his MASc from the University of Victoria in 2003, and his PhD from the University of Toronto in 2012. Dr. Alam's doctoral research proposed a hybrid plasmonic waveguide, which sparked global research activity in the field. He has been recognized for his impactful research with the Douglas R. Colton Medal for Research, awarded to a researcher of the year in Canada. Dr. Alam has also worked as a postdoctoral fellow at both the University of Toronto and Caltech, and as a visiting researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research interests include nanophotonics, plasmonics, metasurfaces, and silicon photonics, exploring applications in optical modulation, energy harvesting, and chemical sensing.
