Biography

Professor Marsden's research interests are centered on the molecular mechanisms that mediate changes in biological form. He is particularly interested in the modulation of cell adhesion states that allow for complex three-dimensional rearrangements, which characterize early embryogenesis. Changes in adhesive states require strict spatial and temporal control, which may involve extracellular signals that cells perceive from their immediate environment. His major research lines involve families of cell adhesion molecules, such as integrins and cadherins. Recent evidence indicates that the regulation of adhesive states is influenced by direct cross-talk among these molecules, indicating a coordination of cell–matrix and cell–cell adhesion. The regulation of cell adhesion found in early development has fundamental significance for a wide variety of health-related issues, including cancer and wound healing.
