Biography

Muriel Hagenaars is an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology at Utrecht University. She received her PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen, where her research focused on the role of dissociation in the aetiology of PTSD. Following her doctoral studies, she continued to investigate the intrusive symptoms of PTSD, primarily utilizing experimental methods such as the trauma film paradigm. In 2010, she was awarded a VENI grant for her research on the role of freezing in the development of emotional memories, exploring cognitive factors involved in this process. Her research trajectory further evolved during a NIAS fellowship at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 2017, where she began to integrate neuroscience and animal research with clinical applications. More recently, her work has increasingly incorporated Data Science methodologies to enhance clinical practices. In addition to her academic responsibilities at Utrecht University, Hagenaars provides consultation to the police on complex cases and serves as the research coordinator at the Altrecht Center for Personality Disorders.
